Nest

A 3D printed data physicalization of threatened bird species.

Concept
Habitat loss, light pollution, skyscrapers, and many human activities cause countless migrating birds to get lost, collide, and die every year. When people walk in the city, there may be a bird that can no longer fly.

My project is a riddled nest, showing the how over 200 countries worldwide affects on the threat level of bird species globally. It consists of two parts: the riddled nest and 30 defferent feathers. Each hole represents the number of threatened bird species in a country. The bigger the hole, the worse the situation. 30 white feathers symbolize 30 worst countries in bird conservation. The greater the frequency of the feather curve, the worst the bird's living environment.

The concept aims to communicate the urgent need for bird-friendly urban planning by visually portraying the terrible situation faced by birds. It is intentionally open-ended, inviting viewers to reflect on possible solutions and personal actions to make urban environments safer for migratory birds. It stimulates a dialogue on the intersection of urban development and environmental conservation.

Develop
I used Grasshopper to process the data, but my computer got stuck. So I pre-process the data and then import them in Grasshopper.

Here's the basic design of the nest. I drawed the curves in Rhino and then import into the Grasshopper.

The feathers were desigend to show data with the frequency of waves. Each feather represented a country's data.
